29 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 25.03.2022 MTP English screen on his cuboidal head had several green pixels, which formed the word, ‘searching’. “It’s a human baby, not a bot,” said Tap. Carefully, slowly, Switch bent to pick up the weird looking creature. The thing started to cry. “What did you do?” said Tap. “I don’t know!” “Do something!” “Like what?” asked Switch. Suddenly, Tap had a brilliant idea. “Maybe I could print something out with my 3D printer?” Beep beep: Tap printed out a large colourful rattle. Switch held the rattle up to the baby’s right hand but when she did, she noticed that something was already in his hand. It was a USB stick. So Switch grabbed the USB stick and replaced it with the rattle. Immediately, the baby was silent. “Hooray!” yelled Tap. Switch showed Tap the USB stick. “What? A USB stick?” exclaimed Tap. “Just the same,” confirmed Switch happily as she had never seen Tap look this surprised before. “You should upload that in to your hard drive, maybe it’ll have a note on it or something. I don’t know. Maybe it will tell us where to return that weird thing,” commented Tap. Switch did this, and like Tap had guessed, there was a note attached to the USB stick. The message said, “If found, please return to The Inventor.” Part 3 The message said, “If found please return to The Inventor.” Tap said, “Do you remember the Professor telling us the story of The Inventor?” “Yeah,” said Switch. “I thought it went: in a time before robots there was a stupendous inventor. The inventor loved robots so much that she embellished her enormous house with them. When she had filled her house, she invaded her beautiful street with them. Then, when her street was full, she filled her expensive town with them. That was how the metallic city of Amp- Hampton was created.” “But where is she now?” burst out Tap. Suddenly, just as Tap was 3-D printing a ball for the baby, it viciously spat wet jelly beans at ground-breaking speed into Tap’s 3D printer. They got encased in plastic so that the baby ended up with tiny bean-balls! Quickly, Tap took every jelly bean from the 3D printer and turned around saying, “That baby is really annoying!” “Wait a minute, I’ve got an amazing idea. If we can use your Time-Link to get all of the information about the inventor, we could find out where she is!” exclaimed Switch. Soon their consciousness were leaving their robotic minds. They whisked back like a sonic boom to the year 2022, when the world was becoming more and more advanced and closer to its golden age. They landed haphazardly in a large room, deep underground. It had dusty walls, wires everywhere, a workbench in the corner and prototypes of robots, as still as statues against the wall. With a start, they saw a mobile object, like a baby but bigger, moving around. She was a young woman who was wearing a pristine lab coat. A waterfall of hair tumbled over her neck, and glowing green eyes. There was a sign hung on the door, it read: Inventor’s Lab. Another human entered. He was a middle-aged man with short, straight hair and hazel eyes. The robots stood still against the dusty, grey, wall like the other old prototypes. As The Inventor and her friend chatted anxiously, the robots discovered that The Inventor was creating an entire town where the robots would be built and tested rigorously. Then, Tap and Switch heard the final piece of information. “This house will, one day, become a school where robots will become more and more advanced.” Then, abruptly, the Time-Link flashed in the robots’ minds, and they returned to the present. Tap and Switch ran to their teacher, Professor Processor, and told him everything. “The school used to be the Inventor’s house, but where is the Inventor now?” asked Switch. Professor Processor’s advice was type in the Inventor’s surname KNRARS, to ‘maps’ to try and find out. “Also we found a strange creature. We’ve got it with us now!” Tap and Switch turned around, “Who took the baby?” they both screamed. THE BABY WAS GONE! Part 4 Tap and Switch turned around…the baby was gone! They both screamed so loud, it was like a fire alarm was switched on. Several nuts and bolts they had eaten for breakfast flew out. Tap and Switch immediately started to think where the baby could have gone. A few moments later, everyone could see the two siblings wander around the school. First, they went to Tap’s suggestion, the Hovercraft Playground. To our eyes, it was a piece of magic, ultra-speedy swings and talking slide, but not so much for them. As the pair continued looking they began to grow really worried, they started to tell jokes to make each other feel better. “Why are computers always cool?” asked Tap. “I don’t know,” said Switch. “Because they have multiple fans,” said Tap. “Hahahahahahaha!” laughed the pair. “Why did the chicken cross the road?” asked Switch. “No clue,” said Tap, with a puzzled look on his face. “To get to the other side,” said Switch. “That’s not funny. That’s silly,” replied Tap. They went across the hall to the wire maths room where they checked under desks, behind tech boards and in panel shelves, although they couldn’t find him anywhere. “I really do wonder where that baby could have crawled off to,” bleeped Switch.
