The Arts

Creativity, ingenuity and self-expression are as important as any other academic element of an education. Through Art, Design, Drama and Music, pupils are challenged to unleash their creative energy.

Art & Design

Art & Design in Years 3 to 8 is taught in a large, well-equipped studio, offering pupils the chance to explore a wide range of media, materials, and techniques. There is a kiln for ceramics and a wealth of resources for drawing, painting, and printmaking. Pupils are also introduced to sculpture, photography, and art history as part of their creative journey, with additional exploration of the world of digital art. Pupils are encouraged to experiment and develop their individual interests and wherever a boy shows a particular interest in any medium, we ensure he has the resources and teaching to pursue it further.

In the visual arts, boys are encouraged to express themselves with imagination and independence, discovering the work of artists and craftspeople from different times and from across the globe. Creativity is further nurtured through art and photography clubs, competitions, and exhibitions, all of which celebrate the diversity and quality of the work produced. Pupils, Parents and teachers alike take great pride in seeing their impressive artwork displayed throughout the School.

Drama

We believe that through the performing arts many boys learn to communicate and collaborate. Through dramatic expression they are equipped to explain how they feel and develop empathy through placing themselves in the role of others. Drama is taught within the curriculum and as a co-curricular activity by our full time Director of Drama and by a team of supporting staff. Industry professionals in costume, lighting, sound and stage management support our annual productions.

The department enjoys the use of a purpose-built theatre for lessons and performance. This is where all our productions are staged whether Pre-Prep shows, the Year 5 Mask project or the yearly Year 3-4, Year 6 and Year 8 productions. All boys in both Prep and Pre-Prep have at least one performance opportunity each year. The department also organises trips to see West End shows as well as plays at our Senior School.

LAMDA tuition is offered to specific year groups on a one to one or small group basis.

Music

At Merchant Taylors’ Prep, pupils are encouraged to engage with music in all its forms, both through classroom lessons and co-curricular activities. Participation is high, with many boys receiving instrumental tuition from visiting specialists. A wide range of choirs and ensembles cater to all ages and ability levels, ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to explore and enjoy their musical talents.

The Music Department benefits from dedicated facilities, including purpose-built teaching and practice rooms. Performances take place regularly, both in our own theatre and in The Great Hall at Merchant Taylors’ School. Notable highlights include the annual carol service, joint choral concerts with partner schools and our ‘Young Musician of The Year’ competition.

Music at the Prep is valued not only as a subject but as a powerful means of personal development. We recognise that playing music develops many transferable skills such as confidence, self-discipline and communication – qualities that stay with pupils far beyond the classroom.
