Academic Ethos

At Merchant Taylors’ Prep, our curriculum is designed not only to foster academic achievement but to build the habits of lifelong learners.

Aligned with our Prep Dispositions, our curriculum develops key metacognitive skills – including concentration, collaboration, and independence – equipping pupils to think deeply, work purposefully, and approach new challenges with confidence.

Educational Attainment

We help pupils become reflective and effective learners through carefully structured learning experiences. Progress is a cornerstone of our approach, with tailored support that ensures every pupil – whatever their individual learning needs or background – has the opportunity to succeed. We provide personalised guidance to help each child overcome challenges, and reach their full potential.

Our curriculum meets, and often exceeds, national standards. We offer stimulating pathways for high-performing pupils, while ensuring that every child achieves key milestones and grows in confidence. This balanced approach supports a smooth and confident transition to secondary education, meeting the diverse needs of all pupils.

Holistic Development

Our curriculum nurtures the holistic development of all pupils fostering their academic, social, emotional and physical growth through the following key areas:

The curriculum embeds critical thinking and problem-solving skills through enquiry-based learning approaches. Teachers provide appropriate scaffolding to allow all learners to achieve, with a focus on ‘stretch and challenge’ to cultivate higher-order thinking. Research-informed pedagogical strategies ensure that students not only acquire knowledge but develop the cognitive flexibility to apply learning across diverse contexts.

The curriculum integrates outdoor learning as a vital component of pupils’ development. Activities such as Forest School help children build essential life skills, including teamwork, resilience, and adaptability. These experiences foster a connection to nature, encourage problem-solving, and support holistic learning beyond the classroom.

Social and Emotional Literacy

Through PSHE, P4C (Philosophy for Children) and the pastoral system, pupils develop self-awareness and reflection skills, becoming resilient and successful learners. A key aspect is Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) which helps pupils understand healthy relationships, respect for themselves and others, and emotional health. We place a strong emphasis on Wellbeing, encouraging children to build strategies to navigate challenges both now and in the future.

Assessment Approach

Our assessment framework provides insight into each pupil’s educational journey, utilising national baseline assessments and subject-specific progression for robust tracking. In EYFS, assessment is embedded within daily activities, capturing developmental milestones through observation.

As pupils progress through the Prep, our approach evolves to combine ongoing formative assessment, formal summative evaluations, and creative projects that demonstrate deeper understanding. This integrated approach allows for precise tracking and tailored support.
