Coaching lies at the heart of our ethos and approach. Since 2017, we’ve equipped over 250 staff, pupils and parents with a coaching culture – embedding this mindset throughout our pastoral care and shaping how we support, guide and educate every member of our community.

What is a Coaching Culture?

At Merchant Taylors’, we foster a culture that empowers pupils to find their own solutions. Rather than simply offering advice, our staff – trained as expert listeners and thoughtful questioners – engage in pastoral conversations that help boys reflect, gain clarity, and develop the confidence to navigate challenges independently.

Through coaching conversations, pupils are guided to identify what they want to achieve, understand their current situation, and determine their next steps. At the heart of this approach is our belief in mutual respect: when boys feel genuinely heard and supported, they are most likely to take ownership of their decisions and feel empowered by the process. This foundation helps them not only solve problems today but build the self-awareness and resilience they’ll need for the future.
