Year 4’s Animal Adventure to Woburn Safari Park

Writes Claire Jones, Year 4 Class Teacher

With great excitement, Year 4 visited Woburn Safari Park on Thursday 19th March. The day began with a lesson from one of Woburn’s Educators. She talked to the boys about birds of prey feeding behaviours and gave them the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet. The boys had to concentrate hard to see the bones within each pellet as some were extremely small. The bones gave them clues as to the types of animals that had been eaten by each owl which was very interesting. Unfortunately, the smell from the pellets was rather unpleasant and we were glad to escape into the fresh air once we had finished!

Our next adventure was the foot safari to discover some of the smaller animals that live at Woburn. These included visiting the Reptile Ranch, Otter Falls, Himalayan Heights, where the red pandas lived, and Sea Lion Beach. We watched the otters being fed and enjoyed getting splashed by the sea lions as they jumped in and out of the water. The day ended with the road safari. Our guide’s fantastic knowledge about every animal we saw really helped the boys to learn new facts and to get an insight into the lives of each animal. One highlight was the number of black bears we saw. As the sun was out, they had decided to leave their homes and enjoy the heat so were roaming around on both sides of the coach much to our pleasure. An enjoyable day was had by all!
