Staff vs. Parent PSA Quiz Night

Writes Colette Quinlivan, Head of Pre-Prep

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the PSA Quiz Night — what a fantastic evening it was!

With over 120 parents, staff and friends of the School attending, the Dining Hall was full of energy, laughter and plenty of competitive spirit throughout the evening. From the brilliantly creative team names to the fiercely contested quiz rounds, it was wonderful to see the Merchant Taylors’ Prep community come together in such a warm and enjoyable way.

A particularly huge thank you must go to Arun, Surbhi, Alia and Mijke for all their hard work behind the scenes in organising and running the event. Last, but certainly not least, enormous thanks to Mr McConnell, whose excellent quiz-mastering (complete with his highly pitched questions as the competition intensified) kept the evening moving brilliantly and the atmosphere buzzing from start to finish. Given the standard of questioning, it is perhaps no surprise at all that the School team has developed such a strong reputation!

A huge thank you as well to everyone who generously donated raffle prizes for the evening. The range of prizes on offer created great excitement throughout the night, with the hamper proving particularly popular!

Halfway through the evening, quiz pens were briefly put down as everyone enjoyed a superb fish & chip supper, which was absolutely delicious and gave teams the perfect opportunity to regroup and discuss tactics for the second half!

At the halfway stage, the staff table appeared to be in a commanding position and looked well placed for victory. However, disaster struck during the notorious “all-or-nothing” round, where just one incorrect answer eliminated the entire sheet, dramatically opening the competition. In the end, the staff team were narrowly beaten by just one point by one of our parent teams. Huge congratulations to our worthy winners!

Commiserations must also go to the recipients of the Wooden Spoon Award! Traditionally, the “wooden spoon” is awarded to the team finishing in last place — a long-standing British tradition dating back to Cambridge University, where it was humorously presented to the student with the lowest passing marks.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, supported and helped make the evening such a success. The sense of community, humour and generosity on display was a wonderful reflection of the spirit of Merchant Taylors’ Prep.

I am looking forward to next year’s PSA Quiz Night already!
