Writes Jimi A. (Y6) Category Years 5-6 Winner
The Beale Poetry competition was incredible. The layout of the competition was clear and easy to follow. There were three different categories: Years 3-4, Years 5-6, and Year 8.
In your Tutor Group or Class in the case of years 3 and 4, your poems were judged by your Tutor or Class Teacher. One pupil from each category was chosen in each Class and Tutor Group and then moved onto the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals you had to recite your poem in front of your respective House. After that one person for each category for each House was chosen.
Then in the finals you had to recite your poem in front of the school, this was then judged by Mr Hilton-Dennis the Head of English at Merchant Taylors’ School, and the winners were chosen. The winners were Haider M. (Y4), Jimi A. (Y6) and Adam K. (Y8).
The competition was designed to bring out the confidence and inner poet in everybody. It worked; each competitor had their own poem delivered with confidence and emotion. All the pupils had fantastic poems, comedic, dark, classics and everything in between. Each poem was unique, and each pupil added their own personalised touches. The teachers, judges and the other competitors all helped to give tips and pointers.
The whole experience was just phenomenal. It was also helpful that everyone was kind and understanding even when things went wrong. I would also like to thank Mr Gough, Mr Miller and all the members of staff that judged, Mr Hilton-Dennis, all the pupils that participated and Mr Sillis who helped me find an extraordinary poem.
