Writes Mr Bowman, Head of Geography

No need to panic! The aliens haven’t arrived (at least none that I know of), it’s just the latest addition to our glorious Prep site – a lovely new weather station. Thanks to the generosity and support of the PSA, the Geography Department was able to order a super modern bit of kit that will be able to monitor the weather and tell us all about the microclimate in our own little corner of the world. The site team have very kindly found it a new home in the Eco Garden and very soon it will be linked up to our system so we can use the data in class, as well as add an extra bit of sparkle to our outdoor learning provision.

Both Year 5 and Year 6 will be studying weather and climate this academic year and I may as well use this opportunity to encourage all Taylors’ pupils and parents to start watching the weather as and when they can (it’s your homework for life, boys!). The easiest way is, of course, to have your eyes open when you’re outside, but you could also watch the weather forecast together at home or take a look at the Met Office website to see what we have in store for the next few days; even if it’s just to help you decide between a pair of shorts or an overcoat, some summery flip flops or a pair of wellington boots.

Over time we’ll be learning what an anemometer does, what those fluffy white clouds are really called, that there is more than one type of rain, what to do when approached by a cold front and exactly how weather changes when it’s under pressure. I’ll be reporting back once we’re off and running, but in the meantime please wave at the weather station so it doesn’t feel lonely and enjoy watching the weather – it’s always out there, so you may as well embrace it!
