Year 5-8 Sports Day: A Celebration of Competition, Achievement and Community

Writes Dominic Todd, Director of Sports

Last week, our Year 5–8 Sports Day proved to be a fantastic success, despite the recent spell of high temperatures. Thanks to the enthusiasm and determination of all involved, we were able to complete the full programme of events and enjoy a memorable day of competition and camaraderie.

Throughout the day, the boys competed with great energy and sportsmanship in a wide range of track and field events. From the excitement of the 80m sprint to the technical challenges of the high jump, long jump and discus, every competitor had the opportunity to showcase their talents. The day concluded with the always popular 4x100m relay, providing a thrilling finale to the competition and two new school records!

The boys competed proudly for their houses, while our Year 8 pupils also had one final opportunity to challenge the record books before moving on from Merchant Taylors’ Prep. Their efforts, along with those of every competitor, contributed to an atmosphere filled with determination, encouragement and healthy rivalry.

One of the highlights of the day was the tremendous support from the wider Prep community. Parents turned out in large numbers to cheer on the boys armed with their picnic blankets and plenty to drink, while several Old Boys returned to lend a helping hand and support the event. Their presence added to the wonderful sense of community spirit that was evident throughout the day and helped make the occasion so enjoyable for everyone involved.

There were numerous personal best performances across all year groups, demonstrating the hard work and commitment the boys have shown throughout the year. Alongside these achievements, several school records were also broken, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already outstanding day.

At the conclusion of the competition, the prestigious Victor Ludorum awards were anounced to the top athletes in their respective year groups. Congratulations to Ronan M. (Y5), Jimmy A .(Y6) and Ayaan D. (Y 8), who were recognised for their exceptional performances across the day’s events.

For our Year 8 pupils, this Sports Day marked the final time they would compete at Merchant Taylors’ Prep. They have been wonderful role models throughout their time at the school, and we wish them every success as they move on to the next stage of their education. We look forward to welcoming many of them back in the future to support the event, just as so many Old Boys did this year.

A huge thank you goes to all the staff, parents, Old Boys and pupils who helped make the day such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s Sports Day, when Years 3–6 will take centre stage for another exciting celebration of sport, teamwork and school spirit.
